Akranes

After the 2008-10 economic crisis the icelandic economy was close a total meltdown. All three major banks had gone bankrupt, when large account holders from the United Kingdom and the Netherlands suddenly pulled out their money. The fishing industry still remains very important for the icelandic economy. Of all icelandic exports, 40% still just are fishery products. A dispute on Iceland’s fishing industry also brought membership negotiations with the EU to a screeching halt in 2013. In 2015 Iceland finally withdrew its formal request for EU-membership.

The series shows 25 pictures of the icelandic city of Akranes. Pictures are fragmented and/or presented as overlays. Akranes is a small city north of Icelands’s capital of Reykjavik. The city still mainly relies on fishing.
