Corviale

Nuovo Corviale is a housing complex on the west end of the Italian capital of Rome. The complex consists of two huge buildings, arranged next to each other and stretching over a total length of almost one kilometer. The building, which has been completed in 1975, was designed to serve as a home for almost 8.000 people.

Bearing a close resemblance to French architect Le Corbusiers Unité d’Habitacion, the impressive Nuvo Corviale contains floors with designated areas for shops and commercial enterprises – a vertical city on the border of the green belt of rome, according to the architect Mario Fiorentino. The project Corviale with its utopian vision was however somehow unsuccessful. Crime and high unemployment slowly started to tarnish the building’s reputation. The demolition of the housing project remains a contentious issue in Roman city’ politics.
