Elizabeth

The suburb of „Elizabeth“ is a former township that has been incorporated as part of the metropolitan area of the city of Adelaide, Australia. The neighborhood ranks amongst the poorest areas of the Adelaide in terms of household income. Several neighborhoods in the vicinity also frequently report high crime rates, drug abuse being particularly rampant. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics the median weekly income in Elizabeth is around 411 Australian Dollars. However, other more affluent Adelaide suburbs have seen their personal weekly income increase to more than twice that amount in the last few years.

Until October 2017 Elizabeth also featured the GM-Holden Elizabeth car assembly plant. The car plant which opened in 1963 was the main assembly plant producing Holden cars in Australia until its final closure last year. By now all engine and vehicle manufacturing in Australia has ceased and Holden will continue as an importer of vehicles. Over the course of the last few years more than 2.500 jobs were lost in the Elizabeth area alone. High labour costs are seen as the main reason why production has ceased and gone overseas.
